"DNA and the AKC"

    http://www.akc.org/dna/index.cfm

"Making the Science Work for You"

"The AKC offers a comprehensive set of voluntary and mandatory programs to ensure the integrity of the AKC
registry: voluntary DNA Profiling; the Frequently Used Sires requirement; the Fresh-Extended/Frozen Semen
requirement; the Multiple-Sired Litter Registration Policy; the Import Breeding Stock requirement; and the Kennel
Inspections/Compliance Audit Program. The AKC has built the world's largest database of canine DNA profiles
for parentage verification and genetic identity purposes."

"The Science Behind AKC DNA Profiles"

"AKC DNA Profiles are generated using the same technology used by law enforcement agencies throughout the
world. How does this work? In humans and dogs alike, each gene is present as two copies (displayed as
letters). Offspring receive one copy of each gene from each parent in a random process.

This technology does not use actual genes, but other DNA sequences that are also inherited one copy from each
parent. For this reason, your dog's AKC DNA Profile does not provide any information about the conformation of
the dog or the presence/absence of genetic diseases. Furthermore, AKC DNA Profiles cannot determine the
    breed of a dog."

    "Multiple-Sired Litter Registration"

    http://www.akc.org/dna/multisire.cfm

" The American Kennel Club allows for the registration of litters with more than one sire. This is effective for litters
whelped September 1, 1998 and forward. Parentage must be determined using the AKC's DNA Profile Program
prior to registration, and special fees apply.

  • Obtain AKC DNA test kits for all potential sires, dam and all puppies. (In some cases, the parents may
    already be DNA’d).
  • Collect and submit the DNA samples for the sires, dam and all puppies. (In some cases, the parents
may already be DNA’d). Samples are collected using a painless, non-invasive cheek swab and can be
returned via US Mail, Fed Ex, or other express mail.

When the correct parentage is determined, submit the appropriate litter registration application. If all puppies are
sired by one dog, then a regular AKC Litter Registration Application is used (cost is $25 plus $2 per puppy).
If the litter has two or more sires, then the Multiple-Sired Litter Registration Application http://www.akc.
org/pdfs/semenfe.pdf  is used. An additional fee of $200 is required, plus the normal registration fees for each
sire/pup combination. For example: a litter with 2 puppies from one sire and 3 puppies from a second sire would
therefore cost $200 plus $29 for litter one and $31 for litter two = $260 total. These fees are in addition to the DNA
    processing costs."

    "DNA Parentage Evaluation Service"

    http://www.akc.org/dna/parentage_evaluation.cfm

"The AKC will evaluate the parentage and provide you with a Parentage Evaluation Table and written report for the
litter. The evaluation must, of course, be based upon genotypes on file with the American Kennel Club, from
either the Parent Breed Club Program or DNA Profile Program."

    "AKC DNA Parentage Profile"

    http://www.akc.org/dna/dnaparentage.cfm

"AKC's DNA Operations is pleased to offer a new DNA Parentage Profile. The Profile displays the DNA genotypes
on file for your AKC-Registered purebred dog and his/her sire and dam, and indicates that his/her parentage has
been verified. The Profile offers another link to your dog's pedigree information, and adds more value to his/her
AKC Registration. The handsome, colorful profile is offered for $20.00. To request a Profile, simply complete the
Parentage Profile Order Form including all required signatures, and return the form with payment to AKC DNA
    Operations."

"Frozen and Chilled Semen DNA Requirements"

"The AKC Board of Directors has modified the policy dealing with the use of fresh-extended and frozen
    semen as follows:
    •        After October 1, 1998, AKC DNA Profiling is required for all stud dogs whose semen is collected for
fresh extended or frozen use, including foreign stud dogs collected for imported semen use in the United
    States.
    •        The intent of this requirement is to include all semen collected for storage and/or shipment for the
purpose of artificial insemination, but not to include artificial insemination where the dog and bitch are
    both present.
    •        Frozen semen collected and stored prior to October 1, 1998 in accordance with AKC's regulations
and procedures is exempted from this requirement.
    •        Cheek swab samples must be obtained by the collector and submitted with the notification of
collection to AKC (if the DNA sample is not already on file with AKC).
    •        DNA processing expenses are paid by the owner at a set fee (currently $40 or prepaid only $35). An
AKC DNA Genotype with the DNA Profile and Number is issued to the owner."

    "Imported Breeding Stock DNA Requirement"

    http://www.akc.org/dna/imported_breeding_stock.cfm

"Effective for imported dogs registered on or after March 1, 2006, any imported dog registered with the AKC must
have an AKC DNA profile prior to registering its first litter whelped in the United States. This requirement does not
affect foreign dogs registered with the AKC before March 1, 2006. This requirement applies to both males and
females and will be used to verify future generations produced by these dogs.

What breeders/owners need to do if they own a sire or dam that is subject to the requirement:
    1. Obtain a DNA test kit.
    2. Send the DNA cheek swab sample, the required paperwork and payment to the AKC in the envelope
provided in the DNA test kit.

To eliminate delays in processing litter applications, the completed test kits should be submitted in advance
of the litter application. Breeders/owners fulfill the requirement when the DNA test kit arrives at DNA Operations
in Raleigh and is logged into the Database, even though an additional six to eight weeks are required to obtain
the actual DNA profile. The parentage verification policies of all current DNA programs will be applied to this
requirement, as will the discipline policies of the Compliance Audit Program.

The AKC is now accepting DNA results produced by MMI Genomics through other registries."

    "DNA Test Kits"

"AKC has two types of kits. The regular kit is available at no charge, and the $40 processing fee (per dog) is due
when the sample is returned to the AKC. We also offer a Prepaid Test Kit for only $35 (per dog). You can save $5
per dog by paying in advance."
